    Dia Uno

Dinner in Bellingham last night with a great group of hippie folk.  Asked everyone at the table for a brief argument for the best fruit ever… 4 votes apple, 2 votes tomato, 1 vote starfruit (which is blatantly incorrect and yes I do judge people for this answer), and 2 votes grapes (of either the red or green variety- no discrimination).  I think apple probably speaks for the Northwest in general- we grow them well and often.

The tomato, however, has a historical importance that can not be denied.  Where would we be without this soft, round, red, juicy ingredient of all recipes?  I shudder to think.  What would pizza be without tomato paste?  Spaghetti without prego? Guacamole without rotelle? Wars have been fought over tomatoes, without a doubt.  Perhaps not directly but at least over the land on which they are grown.  I have no historical evidence but trust me, I have many leather bound books.  Indisputably, however, tomatoes are a staple of most cuisine in the world - nothing we could say about the apple or starfruit.

Grapes, I will concede, have had a crucial impact on the culinary experience.  And while I would rather chew dirty socks than eat red grapes, I will always appreciate the ability of wine to make a family gathering about 10 times less awkward than it otherwise would be- that and first dates.

So cheers to tomatoes and grapes- may your circular, sugary superiority prosper.
